Living in London—a city I adore—has given me many opportunities, including connecting with some truly fascinating people and fellow dog lovers. One of those people is Vinia, whose passion for animals runs deep and whose dedication to rescue work is nothing short of inspiring.
“My passion for animals has been with me for as long as I can remember, fueled by an appreciation for their emotional intelligence, boundless capacity for love, and unwavering loyalty,” she tells me.
I was curious to know where this journey began, so I asked…
How did it all begin?
“About a decade ago, I found myself volunteering in dog rescue, and from that moment on, my dedication to helping the underdog—quite literally—only grew stronger. I was totally hooked!”
What sparked that commitment so deeply?
“I quickly realized how many dogs, through no fault of their own, find themselves in dire situations. Whether abandoned, mistreated, simply unwanted or due to unforeseen circumstances in their humans’ lives, these dogs deserved another chance!”
What do you love most about what you do?
“My role in rescue has allowed me to spend time with incredible dogs from all walks of life, including those from both the UK and Romania (and other countries too!).”
What’s something you wish more people understood?
“There are so many negative stereotypes surrounding rescue dogs, and I’ve made it a personal mission to help change the narrative. Some people assume rescue dogs are damaged, difficult, or incapable of bonding with a new family. However, I’ve seen time and time again how these dogs not only adapt but thrive when placed in the right home.”
What helps them turn that corner and thrive?
“The key to their transformation is simple: patience, understanding, and proper guidance. With the right setting and an owner equipped with sensible advice, most rescue dogs blossom into loving and loyal companions. The resilience of these animals continues to humble me, and their ability to forgive and trust again, despite past hardships, is nothing short of inspiring.”
What keeps you going, even through the tough days?
“Every successful adoption at Sorana’s Strays fuels my determination to continue this work. There is no better feeling than watching a once-neglected or unwanted dog settle into a home where they are truly cherished. Seeing their tails wag with joy and their eyes light up with trust—and the joy they bring to their owners—reminds me why I do what I do.”
“Rescue work is not always easy—it comes with heartbreak, frustration, and moments of doubt. But at the end of the day, knowing that I’ve played a part in changing even one dog’s life makes every challenge worthwhile.”
Any final words for people considering adoption?
“My journey in dog rescue is far from over, and I remain as committed as ever to advocating for these incredible animals. Whether through hands-on work, spreading awareness, or helping people understand the joys of adopting a rescue, I will continue to stand by the underdogs. Because, in the end, they always prove that they were never truly broken—just waiting for someone to believe in them.”
“If you’ve ever considered adopting a rescue dog, I encourage you to take the leap. You might just find that they rescue you right back!”
